So excited to be the 12,278th backer for The Everlast Notebook. This is an electronic gadget I can get behind! It combines the power and learning efficacy of taking handwritten notes with the technology of storing content in the cloud. The notebook lasts forever – you write on a page, choose where you want the notes to end up, scan the QR code on the page and you’re done! Then take a moist towel and erase the page. Easy peasy.

Amazing! Perfect gift for high school and college students! I bought a handful for myself as well 🙂

Concerned about the safety of your college students? Just found this fantastic product called Guard Llama – it’s a handheld device that your student can double-tap – on a key fob. Kind of like “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” except that police is automatically dispatched along with the photo of the student. Looks awesome and it’s only $10 per month.

LINK BELOW: It’s not surprising at all that Instagram has been called the “worst social media site for your mental health.” For me, IG is the perfect storm – the crossroads of where projectile vomit shallowness meets vapid attention seeking. What’s not to love???
As parents, we have to constantly balance on the line between doing what’s best for them and what they’re asking to do. And that line is wafer-thin…any Creosote Monty Python fans? That’s about how I feel about IG.

What follows is the actual, true, surreal conversation I JUST had with a 22-ish-year-old young woman at a boutique….

I’m in the Chicago-area presenting to students and parents. I have a few hours this morning to explore and I decided to go shopping in a boutique-y area. The lovely and very sweet young woman helping me was telling me all about her recent internship experience in Australia.

The cadence and valleygirl-esque bass line of her dog-whistle-pitched speaking voice was making me seasick but she was lovely and eager and super excited and young and shiny and new – her vacuum sealed soul had only JUST whooshed into the universe.

It was an utterly exhausting effort to NOT stab myself in the eye repeatedly with the criminally overpriced keychains on the counter. Which, by the way, are no longer called “keychains” – they’re now called “key companions”. Apparently, my keys have been lonely ALL THIS TIME- I had no idea.

But the monologue continued….she was “like totally” telling me about her internship except that she’s mentioned the actual “job” in passing for only about 30 seconds. For the rest of the conversation, she has in copious and excruciating detail explained to me how “like totally” AWESOME her apartment is (oceanview), the local bar scene, the weather, the bikini she bought, etc.

THEN the following happened:

girl: Yeah, so my mom is “like totally” irritated with me because my internship has cost her like a ton, since I don’t get paid. She’s getting annoying.

me: (taking a mother-may-I-giant-step AWAY from the “key companions”)…….Well, internships don’t usually pay so that makes sense – Australia IS “like totally” expensive and kind of far though.

girl: I know, right? But how else am I supposed to PROVE to my mom that I can be “like totally” independent?

me: Well, I’m sure that when you begin to *actually* live independently then your mom will “like totally” see that you can do it.

girl: Well yeah, but that’s what I’m “like totally” doing now.

me: Nooooo, your MOM is paying for everything – that’s not what independent means. So here’s what you can do….go home today and say:
‘hey Mom, when I go back to Australia for my unpaid internship – I’m going to “like totally” pay for everything myself – my apartment, my clothes, my entertainment – even my toilet paper – I don’t want you to send me one dollar. Because I want to show you that I can be “like totally” and completely independent.’
If you tell her that – she will do a happy dance, you will prove your independence, and BEST of all – she will no longer be annoying!

girl: (Silence)……….Waiiiiiittt, but I “like totally” can’t afford to do that yet.

me: Oh, really? So you’re not “like totally” independent until you do that. You’re not independent until you realize that you only have enough money for toilet paper OR vodka, not both – and you can only choose one.

girl: Wait, so what’s the answer?

me: Go home, thank your mother, get a local internship AND get a second paid part-time job so you can save money to GET OUT of your mother’s house.

girl: Nooooo, what’s the answer to the toilet paper or vodka riddle?

me: WHAT? It’s not a riddle. It’s a life choice – you’re going to get a lot of those – you know like in life.

girl: “Like totally” – but what would YOU do?

me: Steal the toilet paper from McDonald’s and buy the vodka.

girl: Wow, You’re so wise.

me: Like totally.

Thanks to Jason C (a middle school principal) who made me aware of this article. It reviews a bit about suicide contagion. Another issue from my perspective…it’s dangerous to imply that cyber bullying causes suicide or sexual assault causes suicide or any other issue causes suicide. None of these issues cause suicide. To imply that any single factor causes suicide can be dangerous because an already at risk person may presume that because they were bullied or because they were sexually assaulted the only logical conclusion is to commit suicide.

13 Reasons Why: Should Parents Be Concerned About This Netflix Series?

Despite being touted by some as a life-saving work, 13RW could do more harm than good by disregarding best practices in media portrayals of suicide.

Thursday, 27 April 2017 11:59 pm

Excellent article on why you should NOT let your children watch “13 Reason Why” on Netflix. In my opinion this is a worst case scenario of variables:
* viral popularity of the movie
* binge watching tendencies (watching episode after episode with no break)
* glamorization of suicide (whether accidental or not)
* lack of parental oversight

To be honest this isn’t even a case where I even see value in watching WITH your child.

Analysis | ‘13 Reasons Why’ depicts a graphic suicide. Experts say there’s a problem with that.

The premise is at odds with how experts say we should talk about the issue.

I LOVE THISSSSSSSS!!!

Jason Caudill, the amazing principal of the middle school at Bexley City School District, created the poster you see below after my “Don’t Be A Sheep” student presentations. I tell the kids that when you think that a “hot Russian model named ‘Svetlana’ is following you on Instagram – it’s really Ralph.” Mr. Caudill took that idea and ran with it, creating this hilarious poster. Apparently, the kids absolutely loved it.

Well done Mr. C <3

Last night a mom I will only identify as Laura..came to my parent presentation and then went home and changed her cover photo on FB. Although I don’t know exactly why she changed it, I can only presume that it was because her FB cover photo was a photo of her family. You see…The cover photo on your profile cannot be hidden and remains public; which could provide someone with breadcrumbs of information about your children which you should NOT make public..like their names, ages, city-state location,
school name, hobbies, sports, etc.

I have concealed Laura’s identity (below) out of respect for her diligence to her family’s security. Laura: well done!!

I really enjoyed your presentation at Bexley High School last night. As someone that’s been in the technology field for the better part of two decades, I thought I knew what there was to know to protect my kids. What an eye opener. We talked this morning (my kids and I) and they welcomed the changes I discussed with them. It almost seemed like they were saying “what took you so long?”

Many in our community didn’t get a chance to attend. Is there a way (video perhaps) where they can get that information- in the way you presented it?

Fantastic! Thank you!

It’s a great way to encourage coders and a love of technology where you CREATE and BUILD actively rather than just being a passive (aka moronic/drooling) consumer of content.

*** SEE the link below for a great article on this topic.
I’m tired and heartbroken by all the kids I meet who are addicted to porn…Kids as young as 10 or 11 who ask me for help. Children under 13 do not NEED a phone…and as parents it’s our job to limit their access. Even when parents are engaged these situations can still arise. I had a mom recently come up to me after a presentation with tears in her eyes because her 9yo daughter is addicted to porn and they have no idea what to do next. This is real and happening at every single school I visit.

Just got this question: “Is ‘wins’ slang for nude pictures?” Yes, and mostly when referring to revenge porn – which means one party attempting to find/save and reveal naked photos of another person with the goal of embarrassing them publicly. Reason #492 why you need to have these discussions with your children…

You need to watch the video to see the bone-chilling cavalier attitude of this guy. He’s a 28yo Olmsted Falls, Ohio auxiliary cop (=uniform + car, but no gun) AND he was a Boy Scout Troop leader. Thank you to loyal OGeeker – Dorothy from Webster for sharing this link with me. It’s equal parts disappointing and unsurprising. Unsurprising not because of FB’s perceived indifference – I don’t think that’s what it is – it’s the sheer volume of content. Does that make the current scenario okay? Of course not, just another reason onto the pile of why/how we need to keep hawk eyes on our kids.

Susan

I sincerely Thank you Jesse for coming to Webster NY & talking to not only our children this week but to us last night. Your message was Priceless. This is how I know: Was an Eye Opener for me but the impact I saw in my 6th grade quiet son, I’m beyond Grateful.
He came home & spontaneously blurted out “Mom I do know you love me!” Then he told me how you talked to them. He said many now felt that “they” don’t make smart choices w having many high-risk apps.
He knows now from you, why his flip phone was all he needed. I say it everyweek, I swear! Was happy I had PTSA flyer on door since it came home. I bought 3 books.
Please know that all your hard work, the many hours traveling is very much appreciated. My son thinks your great. Said you were “Real”.
He could tell “You Cared”<-That right there shows me how important this event was needed. He told his sister(1yr younger) that flip phones are keeping them safe. Told me what "friends" do. I didn't sleep all night. Tell your family we appreciate your work here!

Go to the Google.com main page and you will see a link just below the search bar which says SECURITY CHECKUP. Click on that link and it will run you through a security a check.

Sit with your kids and have them run through the same check. It might surprise you to see how many “permissions” they’ve given away – and what they are.

Tonight I had the privilege of hanging out with around 35 Cub Scouts from Cub Pack 177- (1st to 5th graders). Apparently, there is an “Internet Safety Pledge” that they need to take (among other activities) in order to earn their badge. I showed up and added some salt, pepper, and gasoline to the Cub Scout message. The kids were attentive and responsive (no small feat in a crowd of 6 to 11-year-olds).

And BTW I was super impressed that one of the items on the Cub Scouts “cyber safety pledge” (of only 5 items) speaks to potential sexual predation and encourages even the youngest children to report feeling “uncomfortable, sad or scared” to a trusted adult.

If you’ve been here for a little while you already know how I feel about child victims – especially male victims – where crimes go vastly underreported and underacknowledged.

Well done Cub Scouts. Now….if you could just do something about grown men in a shorts-uniform…..unless you’re a Bahamanian homicide detective with a cute British accent – um no.

Absolutely heartbreaking story….One part that sticks out for me though – now that this poor girl is gone, other students are supposedly coming forward to the school with names of suspects (of the bullies) and other bits of evidence. WE (as parents) need to get our kids to engage in these behaviors BEFORE someone dies.

PARENTS: How do your children see YOUR kindness? How do YOU speak about other people to your children? What have they learned from YOU? Ask your children what THEY might have done to stick up for this girl.

If we don’t begin at home – our “Armchair Outrage” isn’t going to change anything.
